Tung oil is a hard wearing natural derived oil that is non toxic and food safe. Along with being highly resistant to water and stains, these traits make pure Tung oil a good choice for kitchen worktops, utensils, and any other outdoor and indoor woodworking projects.
It will prevent the wood from drying out along with that high water resistance, and it’s a completely natural oil with no additives. It’s the perfect choice for children’s furniture and finishing wooden toys as well.
However, it dries to a lovely matte finish to keep that natural look, enhancing the beauty of green.
In the below image, you can see the effects on three different pieces of wood. Salt light to dark colored woods, how the oil darkens them to a different degree.
So, it’s always a good idea to test in an inconspicuous area first to make sure you’ll be happy with the results. However, the oil is very easy to apply; you just need to make sure the water is clean and dry. Depending on the wood’s absorbency, it may be worth diluting the Tung oil with white spirit at a ratio of 1:1 to help penetration into the wood. Then, apply liberally to a lint free cloth and simply wipe into the wood following the direction of the grain.
You should really saturate the wood with the first application, so that surface of the wood is really wet with the oil. So keep flooding the wood until it looks all wet. Getting the oil deep down into the wood fibers at this point will simply protect the wood more and keep it looking good for longer.
Leave the wood for 20 minutes to soak the oil after wiping off the excess oil with a clean and dry cloth. Furthermore, wood needs more than 24 hours to dry and harden the oil thoroughly. After that, you need to apply the second coat of Tung oil but don’t need to dilute it. Again, leave it for 20 minutes and wipe out the excess oil. Then leave it for another 24 hours to dry fully.
Now, you use fine sandpaper for a more smooth surface. This is the process of applying Tung oil on the wooden surface but keep in mind that you need to do this every year to maintain your wooden furniture more durable and longer lifespan.
Now, you know it’s super simple to use Tung oil on the wood, furniture, and others.
